Pressure vessel shells and heads
Plate for ASME Section VIII fabrication, including sour service
Vessel plate selection is a temperature and service question. SA516 covers ambient and moderate temperature work, SA387 Cr-Mo grades take over where creep and hydrogen attack start, and in wet H2S service the plate has to be HIC tested and hardness controlled before it is fit to use at all.

- Standard vessels and storage: SA516 Gr 60 or Gr 70, normalised and impact tested
- Wet H2S / sour service: SA516 Gr 70 with NACE hardness control, HIC (TM0284) and SSC (TM0177)
- Elevated temperature and hydrogen service: SA387 Gr 11, 12, 22 Class 2
- High temperature and supercritical duty: SA387 Gr 91
- Through-thickness Z grades, simulated PWHT and SA578 ultrasonic examination on request

أسئلة يطرحها المشترون حول هذه الظروف.
What do we need to specify for sour service vessel plate?
Grade and thickness plus the testing: NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance, hardness limit (typically 200 HBW max), HIC testing to NACE TM0284 with CLR and CTR acceptance, and SSC testing to TM0177 if the specification calls for it. Calcium-treated, low-sulphur plate is used for the HIC-tested supply.
When do we move from SA516 to SA387?
Once design temperature pushes into creep territory or hydrogen partial pressure puts you on the Nelson curve — typically above about 400 C. Gr 11 and 12 cover moderate duty, Gr 22 is the refinery hydroprocessing standard, Gr 91 for the highest temperatures.
